Uma das maiores estrelas de todos os tempos, costumava personificar mulheres decididas, duras e ambiciosas. Foi a única atriz do cinema mudo que chegou aos anos 70 sem conhecer a decadência, apesar de alguns momentos delicados em sua carreira. Nascida Lucille LeSueur, no Texas, em 23 de março de 1908, começou como dançarina, estreando nos cinemas na Metro, em 1925. Seu primeiro filme com o nome Joan Crawford, no mesmo ano, foi The Circle. Começou a usar sua voz grave e marcante em A Indomável, de 1929. A última grande fase foi a dos thrillers (62/65), abandonando os cinemas em 1970. Foi casada com o ator Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (29/33), com o ator Frnachot Tone (35/39), com Philip Terry (42/46), quando adotou quatro crianças, e com Alfred N. Steele (55/59), cuja morte a levou à vice-presidência da Pepsi. Faleceu em Nova York em 13 de maio de 1977.
